How to Lose Weight and Be Healthy!

by dr.g

This is the time of year many folks pledge to lose weight and eat healthier. Unfortunately, often times the focus is only on the first part and since the latter (eat healthier) is never initiated any lost weight returns very quickly.

Many folks like to do cleansing to help them lose weight.  We actually think that can be a really great way to start down the road of healthier eating habits and a great way to jump start weight loss. A safe cleanse should  provide all of the vitamins and minerals you need and doesn’t have you running to the bathroom every half hour or ingesting large amounts of caffeine. By eliminating meals or fasting and then reintroducing food it helps you deal with your emotional connection to food and eating in general. Limiting the amount of meals you eat on certain days also helps one to take an inventory of what you are putting in your mouth rather than mindlessly eating without realizing the amount of fake foods and sugar you are ingesting.

The Isagenix 9 day Cleanse is a nice start if you want to cleanse, but more important is what comes after. Many people will continue with a 30 day cleanse, using shakes for meal replacement which helps them get all of their vitamins and minerals for the day while they improve their eating habits by bringing in more fresh fruits and vegetables.  In fact, focusing on eating the right foods will not only help you lose weight but more importantly reduce inflammation in the body.

In fact, we know that the real problem with the American Diet is not cholesterol, or even saturated fat. It is the intake of way too much sugar, much of this from grains and refined carbohydrates, as well as unhealthy oils like peanut, cottonseed and canola. By shifting the dietary intake to fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, and healthy fats from raw nuts, avocadoes, olive and coconut oil, and even dairy products we can shift our bodies pH and reduce inflammation in the body. The mediterranean diet, Atkins diet, Paleo diet all have a few things in common and that is eating things that grow in the ground, or need to be refridgerated or they will spoil. Packaged products that do not really spoil typically contain sugar or processed grains etc…. which all create inflammation and lead to weight gain. Red meat, bacon, cheese, eggs- you can eat all of these things if you like but you have to make sure you are eating a lot of vegetables along side of them to buffer all that protein.

The DeFlame Diet by David Seaman is a great book that explains how  the right foods contribute to health and dispels a lot of the myths and falsehoods about cholesterol, fat, and carbohydrates. For some help on how to shop, check out this video on shopping healthy at ALDI.
